Strengthening health through feed supplements

Due to modern breeding methods, animals are subject to more stress. In addition, the environment promotes the spreading of pathogens. On the other hand, since 2006, antibiotic growth promoters may no longer be used in animal feed. Therefore it is indispensible to stabilise and/or improve the growth and health condition of the animals in a natural way. A central starting point for this is to look for feeds that strengthen the body’s own immune system so that the animals survive stress situations without any harm, such as weaning for piglets, fighting for a position in the hierarchy, or a new basic diet.  Several studies in the past few years have proven that beta-glucans and mannans have a positive effect on the immune system.

How glucans and mannans work

Glucans and mannans are polysaccharides. Beta glucan, and primarily beta-D glucan, activates the body’s immune system. Hence, mixing in this polysaccharide, even in a small dosage, can lower the mortality rate, improve stress resistance, and generally lead to a better sense of well-being, which can be seen by a shiny coat.

Studies have shown that glucans have a stimulating effect on various immunocompetent cells and effector mechanisms. In the process, both specific as well as non-specific immunological defences are stimulated, especially macrophages, T-lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. In addition, increased formation of phagocytes as well as antimicrobial, arteriosclerotic and anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated. These positive effects are attributed to the special molecular structure of the polymers with their branched side chains as well as the molecular weight.

Mannans are also polysaccharides and promote the reproduction and stabilisation of the positive intestinal flora.

However, the effectiveness is decisively dependent on the digestive system being able to take in and process the components, i.e. the bioavailability. The thin walls of the yeast cell walls ensure that the bioavailability of ProEnMune is very high.

Special Feed ProEnMune

ProEnMune is a special feed made of yeast cell walls with a glucan content of 21% and a mannan content of 25%. This extraordinarily high content is achieved through the gentle drying process of the yeast cell walls.

Yeast is used in a variety of areas of food production and is cultivated in large quantities. Molasses is used as a culture medium for yeast production. After extraction of the cell juice from the yeast, the yeast cell walls remain in a liquid form. They contain the ß-1,3-1,6 glucans and mannans described above. Drying the cell walls increases the concentration of these polysaccharides resulting in the highly effective feed ProEnMune. One thing is important to us: ProEnMune can also be used in ecological agriculture, since all the primary products that are used are guaranteed to be GMO-free (genetically modified organisms).

The liquid yeast cell walls are subject to an initial quality inspection when they are received. If the result is positive, then the yeast cell walls with a total solids content of approx. 15% are sent to the 6 available liquid tanks, each with a storage capacity of 30,000 litres. The liquid mass is gradually transported and sprayed into the yeast dryer. This dryer, which uses the waste heat from our CHP plants, is responsible for size reduction and drying through the swirling air. Afterwards, the dried powder is routed by the air flow to the hose filter, where it is separated from the air. Through screening, ProEnMune is divided into three grain sizes and ultimately put into bulk bags or 25 kg packages for transport.
